The city of Catania lies in a strategic position in the Mediterranian Sea, giving its name to the Gulf where the city is located.

Since 2002, the Catania city center, packed with various monuments of important historical and cultural value, has been selected to be part of the UNESCO heritage.

The underground river Amenano flows beneath the city and it reaches the surface on the fountain of the same name in Piazza Duomo, the main square of the city.

The protector of the city, Saint Agatha, is very worhsipped by the citizenship. During the days of Her celebration (one of the most popular in the world), February 3 to 5, Her relics are carried in procession around the city center until they are returned to the Cathedral, where they can be admired for the rest of the year.

The University of Catania is the oldest academia in Sicily. It was founded almost 600 years ago, in 1434.

Among the many influential people who were raised in Catania, one cannot fail to mention the musical composer Vincenzo Bellini and the famous writer Giovanni Verga, who gifted Italian literature with his masterpiece: I Malavoglia.

Food and sweets: The most representative dishes are the pasta "alla Norma", a typical Sicilian course, served with tomato sauce, fried eggplants and salted ricotta. This particular dish symbolizes the top of Mount Etna, covered with snow and inflamed by lava flows. Continuing: "'u maccu", and the "Minne di Sant'Agata," but also the Sicilian cassata, the cannolis, the olives of St. Agatha, the granita with brioches and the many delicacies of the "tavola calda".

The symbol of the aforementioned Catania's "tavola calda" is the arancino, a small egg-shaped fried rice timball, filled with tomato meat sauce.

The fish is another main course on Catania's lunch tables, especially oily fish, which is frequently used to dress homemade pasta.
